Task 13: Advanced Editing Techniques

Task 13- Advanced editing techniques: Jump cut

From completing this task, I have learnt how to create an effective jump cut sequence to match the emotion of frustration. This is through getting a clip and cutting parts out creating a sense of time and also anger. By doing it well, the piece should look irregular to create tension and include shots that last for longer than other ones and then shorter  than other ones. I think from doing this task I will be comfortable with putting a jump cut into my finished product and I think that it would go well in an eerie or mysterious music video.

More advanced editing techniques:

This task allowed us to focus on harder and better looking techniques. We went out and had to film numerous shots that we could link up that has something change whilst still looking seamless. This worked really well in the 360 jump shot as it looks pretty much exact, however, we did find problems which can be seen within the clips. We didn't use a tripod so it looked obvious that it was edited together as opposed to the seamless edit.
Also, we found it hard to think creatively so we had to copy some videos that had already been made. Overall, i think we made a good effort and have learnt how editing 2 different shots together of pretty much the same thing work together to create a nice and unique shot which i will be thinking of using within my final project.

This task allowed us to use a green screen to make the character be in another place. From doing this, we did encounter some problems as it was our first time using a green screen. In some of the clips, the screen is visible and the background to the room can be seen, to fix this next time, we would use a longer green screen or a taller person to hold it. Also, it can be seen that the camera moves due to not using a tripod to film. This makes the video seem irregular and not seamless. However, i think by using a green screen, we can think of more ways to make our overall piece look better than others by using different filming techniques. I also learnt, from this task, how they work and how to improve our methods of using it which will be crucial if used in our final piece where we would not want any mistakes.

Creative task 3: Create a album cover with photoshop

Task 3:
Use photoshop to re create an album cover to help develop our editing skills and techniques

This task was hard for me as i had never touched photoshop before. My album cover/digipak didn't come out too well as my photoshop knowledge was low and i didn't really know what i was doing. However, i think that from doing this task, i know what to have and not what to have on my cover/digipak when we have to make our own for the final piece. I also learnt that the editing doesn't have to be over the top and simplistic ideas look better than the ones which have a lot of things going on. Mainly, from doing this task, i have learnt the basic techniques to use photoshop and i have been able to experiment with photos and text.

Task 2: Analysis of music websites

Task 2

From completing this task, i have found out different ways of making your website look different to appeal to the intended audience and how things such as colours and fonts can tell the audience what the music will be like and what the artist's genre is. I also found it interesting how some artists and bands don't have anything on their website apart from their latest release as i thought all artists had key information such as tours, news about the person r group and other little bits about their future or shows. This task also allowed me to think what id have on my website to attract the audience, let them know as much information as possible but not to overwhelm them with information.

Creative Task : lip sync video Task 9

Creative Task 1

Create a lip sync video to a song, We chose 'Can't Stop The Feeling' by Justin Timberlake.

lip sync video from Josh Griffiths on Vimeo.

This task allowed us to practise lip syncing for the first time. From completing this task, I have learnt how to edit together videos and a song over it to look like the person is saying it. This will come in handy when i start editing my final piece as the whole piece is going to be about lip syncing and editing. It was also good because i had to work with people i havent worked with, this enabled me to think of more ideas and link their ideas with mine. Overall, i think it turned out to be pretty good considering none of us had ever done this before. I found this task good for me as i could recap my editing and filming techniques which is crucial for me because in my final piece and throughout the time until the proper piece, i will need to use these techniques a lot and be able to confidently apply them into videos. The only problem which occurred is that we filmed it in 4K originally so we had to redo the whole thing. However, this wasn't so bad as we were more confident infront of the camera and we changed a few shots that didn't look to good on the first shoot.

Task 1: History of music videos

Task1: Timeline of music videos and music generally.

Learning comment
From doing this task, I've got a good understanding on how music videos came about and what the early videos were like compared to now. i also found it interesting to see what the most expensive music video was and how much it cost in today's currency. It also allowed me to see how artists bought in current issues such as racism and turned negative things into positive music.
Overtime, it is clear to see that music videos have gained popularity through websites such as YouTube, it has allowed artists to easily distribute their videos and audiences to see them. Also, you can see how well videos have progressed. At the start, videos were very basic and were short but over 80 years, lyric videos and more complex videos have come about.

Creative task 2- 30 cut chorus

Creative task 2

We made a 30 cut video to the chorus of Justin Beiber's song What Do You Mean.

30 Shot Chorus from Tom Cornock on Vimeo.

Learning comment

I found this task quite hard as we had to make a video with 30 cuts in a short time period. I think that the overall outcome was very good and it looks professional. This task made us think of a short narrative which we could include into the chorus of 'What do you mean' by Justin Beiber. From doing this task, we had to incorporate a variety of camera shots, angles and movement to make it as good as possible. We also added parts of the video to match the lyrics which was difficult as we had to cut and remove shots so that it would match up perfectly. This was hard to do but will defiantly improve our overall piece if we can include it.
We also made a storyboard of what we wanted to film but we changed some parts on the day of filming as we thought it would seem better and look seamless, we also wanted it to be fun and lack repetitive actions, like kicking a ball multiple times. I think this task allowed us to think on what angles and movements makes a good video and that a fast paced video doesn't mean its poorly executed in terms of editing and shooting.
