Task 16: Music video analysis

Foals- Birch Tree

Chelsea dagger- The fatiles

When doing this task, we already knew some of the codes and conventions of indie music from other tasks, such as the focus group one. However, i learnt a lot more codes and conventions when doing this task as we looked in detail to try and find them so we could perhaps include them in our final piece. We each picked an indie song each and studied the different categories seen above which allowed us to see what different artists include in their videos. I noticed that, from doing Pompeii, Bastille used countless camera techniques and movements to vary their video as well as a set narrative which was clear to distinguish. This task just allowed us to think and discuss what we want to include in ours to fit the conventions of the genre.

Task 20: Actors

Task 14: Thinking of a song

We had 3 initial ideas we had were The Kooks- She Moves In Her Own Way, Arctic Monkeys- Fluorescent Adolescent and Ratboy- Sign On. These songs are all indie/indie rock as we all enjoy this type of music and listen to it regularly. Here are our ideas on paper:

Task 17: Lyrical analysis

Lyrical analysis gave us a broader vision of what we could film in terms of narrative. The song is about a woman who is reminiscing of her fun and entertaining youth. There is a very strong relation to her sex life and debauchery. As the main message is to do with fun back in her 'hay day', our group have discussed the possibility of basing our narrative around a man who reminisces of his teenage years. I learnt that Goodwin thinks lyrics need to match the on screen performance in order for them to relate together. I feel as if we will use a narrative linked to the lyrics because it will be fun to film and there are lots of things teenagers do that we can film.

Task 15: Video artist, video, lyrics, permission

Fluorescent Adolescent- Arctic Monkeys

You used to get it in your fishnets
Now you only get it in your night dress
Discarded all the naughty nights for niceness
Landed in a very common crisis
Everything's in order in a black hole
Nothing seems as pretty as the past though
That Bloody Mary's lacking a Tabasco
Remember when he used to be a rascal?
Oh, that boy's a slag
The best you ever had
The best you ever had
Is just a memory and those dreams
Not as daft as they seem
Not as daft as they seem
My love, when you dream them up
Flicking through a little book of sex tips
Remember when the boys were all electric?
Now, when she tells she's gonna get it
I'm guessing that she'd rather just forget it
Clinging to not getting sentimental
Said, she wasn't going, but she went, still
Likes her gentlemen to not be gentle
Was it a mega-dobber or a betting pencil?
Oh, that boy's a slag
The best you ever had
The best you ever had
Is just a memory, and those dreams
Weren't as daft as they seem
Not as daft as they seem
My love, when you dream them up
Oh, where did you go?
Where did you go?
Where did you go? Whoa
You're falling about
You took a left off Last Laugh Lane
You just sounded it out
You're not coming back again
You're falling about
You took a left off Last Laugh Lane
You just sounded it out
You're not coming back again
You used to get it in your fishnets
Now you only get it in your night dress
Started all the naughty nights with niceness
Landed in a very common crisis
Everything's in order in a black hole
Everything was pretty in the past though
That Bloody Mary's lacking in Tabasco
Remember when he used to be a rascal?
Arctic Monkeys Background
The Arctic Monkeys first formed in 2002, in the suburbs of Sheffield. The band originally started with 5 members, however, shortly after their first album, the bass guitarist left the group. The grpup have had numerous successes, most notably winning 7 Brit awards; winning best British group and best British album 3 times. Arctic Monkeys signed to the record company Domino in 2005.

Permission:

This task encouraged me to look, in depth, around the band we are doing. We had to find lyrics and look through them which enabled our group to think about potential ideas for the narrative throughout the video. As well, we looked at the band, their success and just how they started and grew which gave us a better understanding and overall jist about their origins. We also created an e-mail to send to their record label, as if we were a larger artist or band wanting to use it. This gave an insight on how other people use their music, as i thought people in the industry would ask them directly, not the record label they are signed to.

Music video ideas: Original concepts

Today, me and the rest of our group set out to find a genre and songs in which we like and would turn into our video. We sat down and discussed the music we like, which i knew before we sat down as i know the people in my group very well. We were thinking between pop and indie music but came to the mutual agreement to do indie. There were numerous reasons as to why we chose indie:

  • Pop music seems more upbeat and watching other pop videos, it would cost more to film.
  • We wanted to focus on narrative and make a strong story which was clear, which we thought would be challenging.
  • We would probably need more actors and locations as well as a suitable narrative. This would be hard as hardly anyone wanted to be in it anyway and we struggled thinking of a narrative and location.
We felt that indie music would be easier to do as it required less money and we didn't want to pay a lot. We then went onto separate computers and looked through different songs in the genre. Originally, we were going to do Ratboy's Sign On but with a discussion with our teacher, we agreed that it was too fast and the lyrics were too literal and would be hard to film. In turn, we decided to pick Arctic Monkey's Fluorescent Adolescent as it's slower but still indie and well known, allowing us to easily recruit a lip singer when it comes to actually filming.
