task 8 part 2: Theory analysis

Task 8 theory analysis logic 1800 from _miketanner

This task enabled me to look at music videos and study the theory within them. It enabled me to grown my knowledge about existing theories i know and how to identify them, a useful tool which i will most probably use when filming and thinking of an idea. By picking out different theories to use to analyse videos, it has helped me learn a lot more abut the different theories as well as finding out new ones such as the UTG theory, which i had never heard of. UGT is all about the fans and viewers and how it can link with them.

Green screen practise

This task enabled me to come to grips with green screen and what i need to do if i want to film my piece with elements of green screen. First, i learnt how to set up the green screen and what i needed to do in order to get a more professional look. The actual fabric needs to be stretched, otherwise creases will be visible diminishing the look and quality of affect. Furthermore, I noticed that to get  an actual look that felt real, you need to get the lighting and effect perfect. In the thumb nail, it is obvious that i am not actually in the location behind me. It was interesting to look through the different backgrounds and was fun trying to allocate a suitable background to the action i am doing. If i am to use a green screen in my final piece i will look hard to find one that will suit our video, although i doubt i will use one as i'm leaning more towards an indie video.

Task 7: Video research (Task 1)

After completing this task, I have distinguished the different codes and conventions for different genres of music. I noticed that the micro-features in indie music are completely different in comparison to music such as heavy metal. The indie song i looked at was Waves by Sleeper Agent. The video came across as weird and unusual, which i sort of expected as i know indie music is unique and different so i guessed some of the videos would be too. The typical codes and conventions I came across didn't surprise me with aspects of mise en scene, editing and camera work. The mise en scene was the weirdest with things going upside down and in different directions. Looking at the examples i chose from the genres hip hop and heavy metal, i was surprised. In the hip hop video i looked at, i expected faster cuts as well as an undeveloped narrative, as most of the time hop hop is solely based around the money side of the industry with many artists thinking it's essential to show off all their expensive clothes and assets. From looking at the example i picked as well as a number of others, i noticed the theme of love come through an awful lot which can e shown through the use of mise en scene but also camera work and editing. Before looking at heavy metal, i didn't know what to expect although it wasn't what i saw. Not all heavy metal music videos are like Slipknots but as it's the one i saw, I noticed a lot of differences to the other genres. First, the camera was different with a lot of close ups of the bands faces(masks) and the other people in the narrative. As well as camera, the mise en scene was different with the focus being of the location and not really the narrative. The band were wearing masks which isn't normally seen in any other genre. Overall, I noticed a lot of codes and conventions which I can hopefully incorporate in my final piece, as i will probably be doing an indie song, i will look at more indie song videos and get a wider insight on other codes and conventions of the genre.

Task7: part 3

Media task 7.3 from _miketanner

This task let me look into different representations within genres. |I looked into common conventions of these genres and how they are shown, usually through the mise en scene included. It was interesting to see how artists challenge normal conventions like the way Charlie xcx has used boys to represent the common look of woman in pop genre.

Task 8; Music consumption (Task 1)

Music Consumption from Tom Cornock on Vimeo.

From this task, i learnt more about what consumers of the videos like and dislike. This was a good task to do as we could discuss elements of music videos that we could incorporate in ours. I found it interesting to hear what people like in music vidoes of different genres and how genres sort of impact their intended audience. This task also helped solidify the codes and conventions expected or seen in genres, especially pop and indie. Overall, i feel that this will help me when picking my genre and the types of things i want in it. As well as this, this task gave me a greater insight on how people can obtain music and how it has changed over the past decade. From buying CDs and pirating them to downloading them on mp3s and more recently through streaming sites such as spotify where you pay a monthly sum to listen.

Task 7: music videos (task 2)

Slide Set created by mike Tanner with GoConqr Mind Map created by mike Tanner with GoConqr

From completing this task, i have found out about different theories and theorists such as  binary opposites. This knowledge will help me construct my own video as i know what type of things can get me more marks. Another thing i have learnt by doing this is how much performance/acting are in certain genres of music as well as types of song, be it sad or happy. I didn't realise that in pop music, their videos are hugely performance orientated with small amounts of actual singing. This is because the larger, well known artists can express opinions and certain issues such as homosexuality because of the position they are in. For example, Logic was able to make a video about a black, gay man to enlighten the public on how these type of men feel. On the other hand, i noticed music which is less common or music that is created by a lesser known artist utilise live performances or use a lot more clips of them or a band singing. This is because the band/singer will want to get as much publicity as possible in order to grow. It is also because these, usually indie bands, don't have a large amount of money to spend on production of videos.
